If you need refrigerator movers in Los Angeles, the safest setup is a licensed, insured two-person crew with a hydraulic liftgate truck. The liftgate takes the weight off people's backs and stairs, and the crew keeps the fridge upright, strapped and padded from your kitchen to the new one. Ask your mover to walk the path first, plan a protected route out, and agree on how the fridge will be handed off and set down carefully at the other end.
This guide covers what actually happens on a fridge job, what drives the price, how to prep your Inglewood apartment or house, and the mistakes that cause dented doors, gouged floors and dead compressors.
The situation: a fridge is the hardest thing in the kitchen
A refrigerator is tall, top-heavy, awkward to grip and full of parts that do not like being tipped. It is also the one appliance that nobody wants to move twice. In every case the question is the same: who can get it out without damage, today or this week, and what will it cost?
What a liftgate changes
A hydraulic liftgate is a platform on the back of the truck that raises and lowers a load between the ground and the truck bed. For appliances it matters for three reasons.
- The fridge never has to be lifted by hand into the truck. It rolls onto the platform on a dolly, rides up and rolls straight in. That removes the riskiest moment of a fridge move.
- It keeps the appliance upright. Manufacturers are consistent on this point. Liebherr says it is always better to transport a fridge upright or at a slight angle, and LG tells owners to keep the refrigerator as upright as possible the entire time you are moving it. LG also says to move the refrigerator in an upright position as much as possible.
- It handles weight a ramp cannot. If your fridge is large or heavy, or you are moving a fridge and a freezer together, ask whether the truck has a liftgate. Ask any mover what their liftgate is rated for before you book.
What it costs: the honest version
We do not quote a number in a blog post, because the right price depends on the job. What we can tell you is what moves it up or down:
| Factor | Lowers the cost | Raises the cost |
|---|---|---|
| Path out | Ground floor, wide door, no steps | Stairs, tight turns, narrow hallway |
| Truck access | Driveway or curb in front | Long carry from a far parking spot |
| Distance | Same neighborhood or nearby city | Long drive, traffic-window timing |
| Extras | Fridge only | Water line disconnect, haul-away, packing |
| Timing | Flexible weekday | Same-day or end-of-month rush |

The cheapest fridge move is the one with a clear path. Measure the doorways, empty the fridge and have the route cleared before the crew arrives. Time spent waiting on a blocked hallway is time you pay for.
Check that your mover is legitimate before you book
California regulates household goods movers, and you can check a company in a minute.
- Companies moving household goods within, into, or out of California must be licensed with the Bureau of Household Goods and Services (BHGS).
- Before you book a local move, ask the mover for their permit details and confirm they are valid for household goods moves. Caltrans says the same thing in plain terms: a mover engaged in intrastate transportation within California must have a permit from the Bureau of Household Goods and Services.
- If you are moving across state lines, ask the mover for proof of their operating authority and verify it yourself before you book.
- The state law also says the bureau must identify authorized household movers on its website, so you can look a company up instead of taking its word for it.
- If a mover cannot show valid credentials, do not hire them.
Ask any mover you are considering for their permit number and a certificate of insurance, and ask us too. A legitimate company will hand both over without fuss.
Get a written estimate, not a text-message guess
For a move within California, the state's guidance is that a visual inspection is required with the estimate. After that inspection, the mover gives you a written estimate or quote detailing the total transportation and service charges. In practice, for a single appliance, a few clear photos and a short video of the route make it much easier for a crew lead to prepare, and the crew can confirm details on arrival.
A few other points from the same state guidance are worth knowing:
- You and your mover must both sign the agreement before your move.
- Ask for a written agreement that states the maximum price you can be charged before you sign anything.
- If you make a deposit, get a receipt.
Those are the things that separate a professional crew from a person with a truck and a promise.
Inglewood specifics: what to plan around
Every building type has its own fridge-moving quirks. These are our observations and advice from working in the area, not city statistics.
Apartments and walk-ups in Inglewood
If your building has stairs rather than an elevator, narrow stairwells and tight landings can decide whether a full-size fridge makes the turn. Sometimes it can with the doors removed and the crew using straps; sometimes it cannot. If you live above the ground floor, tell us the number of flights, whether there is an elevator, and the width of the stairwell. If your building has a freight or service elevator, it may need to be reserved with building management, and some buildings ask for proof of insurance. Ask your property manager early about any rules or time limits that apply to moves in your building.
Houses, alleys and driveways
Where a house has a rear alley or shared driveway, the truck often cannot sit at the kitchen door. The liftgate helps: the truck parks at the end of a driveway, lowers the gate to the ground and loads without needing a wide-open curb. If the only access is an uneven side yard, say so when you request a quote.
Street parking and timing
Street parking can be tight near busy corridors and on event days. Check posted street-sweeping and permit signs on both blocks, tell the crew where the truck can legally stop and, if your building needs a reserved loading spot, set it up first. Mid-morning on a weekday is usually easier than the late-afternoon commute.
How a two-person crew moves a fridge, step by step
Here is the sequence on a typical job. It is how we approach it, and it follows the same logic the manufacturers recommend.
- Walk the path. Before anything moves, the crew checks the doorways, the turns and the floor, and decides where the dolly goes.
- Secure the doors. Liebherr says to secure the fridge door using adhesive tape so it does not open during transport. We tape or strap doors and tie down loose shelves and drawers.
- Disconnect and unplug. Water lines and ice-maker connections are shut off and disconnected. Customers should have the fridge emptied and defrosted beforehand.
- Strap to the dolly and tilt only as needed. The fridge goes onto an appliance dolly with a strap across the body, and it travels at the smallest angle that gets it through the door.
- Roll to the liftgate. The platform lowers to the ground, the fridge rolls on, and the gate raises it to bed height.
- Blanket-wrap and strap in the truck. LG says that when transporting a refrigerator in a vehicle, you should keep it upright and secure it firmly to minimize vibration. We blanket-wrap it and strap it to the wall of the truck.
- Reverse at the other end. The liftgate lowers it, the dolly takes it inside and it is placed upright where it will live.
Do not lay a refrigerator on its back or side unless it truly cannot go any other way. If a tight stairwell forces a tilt, the rest period before plugging in gets longer, and a mover who does not know that is a red flag.
After the move: how long to wait before plugging in
This is the step people skip, and it is the one that can kill a compressor. LG explains that if a fridge is plugged in too soon, the oil inside the compressor may not have settled, which can affect cooling or cause serious damage to the compressor.
The wait depends on the brand and how the fridge traveled:
| How it traveled | What the manufacturers say |
|---|---|
| Upright the whole way | Check your fridge manufacturer's guidance on how long to wait before plugging it in after a move. |
| On its side (LG guidance) | If the refrigerator was moved on its side, LG Electronics USA says to set it upright in its final location and wait at least 2 hours before plugging it in. |
| On its side (Liebherr guidance) | Wait at least 12 hours before switching it back on; for older fridges, Liebherr recommends 24 hours |
| Transported horizontally (LG, stricter case) | Leave it upright for 24 hours before plugging in |
Brands differ, and your owner's manual is the final word, so check it. When in doubt, wait longer. A fridge that sits upright overnight costs you a cooler of ice. A fried compressor costs you a fridge.
Prep checklist for your Inglewood fridge move
Use this the day before:
- Empty the fridge and freezer. Pack or toss food, and bag the ice.
- Unplug the fridge ahead of time so it can defrost, and put towels down for water.
- Disconnect and cap the water line if there is an ice maker, or ask us to.
- Measure the fridge and every doorway, hallway and turn on both ends.
- Clear the path and pull rugs, mats and any wall hangings near the route.
- Confirm parking for the truck at both addresses, and reserve the elevator if your building has one.
- Have your owner's manual handy so you know the recommended wait before plugging in.
How we handle a fridge job
Locally Swift Transport takes a crew-and-liftgate approach to heavy item and appliance transport. For a refrigerator we bring two trained movers, a liftgate, appliance dollies, straps, blankets and floor protection. Ask us about same-day availability when you reach out, and tell us where in the area you are so we can confirm the job is in our range. If you are also packing a kitchen, our professional packing service can wrap dishes and small appliances at the same visit, and you can browse our work gallery to see the kind of jobs we do.
For pricing, we point you to one place instead of a sales call: our pricing page.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to hire refrigerator movers in Los Angeles?
It depends on stairs, distance, truck access and extras. See our pricing page, or ask for a free quote.
Can movers transport a fridge on its side?
They can, but it is not ideal. Keep your fridge upright or at a slight angle if you can, and if yours must travel on its side, check the manufacturer's guidance on how long to wait before plugging it in.
How long should I wait before plugging in a moved refrigerator?
It depends on the brand and how it traveled. Liebherr says that if transported upright, 2 hours is sufficient, while a fridge moved on its side needs at least 12 hours. Check your manual.
How do I know a mover is legal in California?
Ask for the permit number and look it up before you book.
